7th NCNW Board Chair and President October 30, 2023 7th NCNW Board Chair and President, Johnnetta Betsch Cole, sat down with current President, Shavon Arline-Bradley to share insights into her new book, "Speechifying." Speechifying collects the most important speeches of Dr. Cole—noted Black feminist anthropologist, the first Black female president of Spelman College and former director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art. A powerful and eloquent orator, Dr. Cole demonstrates her commitment to the success of historically Black colleges and universities, her ideas about the central importance of diversity and inclusion in higher education, the impact of growing up in the segregated South on her life and activism, and her belief in public service. Drawing on a range of Black thinkers, writers, and artists as well as biblical scripture and spirituals, her speeches give voice to the most urgent and polarizing issues of our time while inspiring transformational leadership and change. Speechifying also includes interviews with Dr. Cole that highlight her perspective as a Black feminist, her dedication to public speaking and “speechifying” in the tradition of the Black church, and the impact that her leadership and mentorship have had on generations of Black feminist scholars. |

Foodie Friends - Connecting with Crittenden
April 16, 2023
Congratulations Everyone!! Last Thursday's cooking class was another successful event under our belt!! Chefs Franzis and Gerry were awesome!! If you have time, be sure to try both of their recipes for a scrumptious seafood dish, shrimp broccoli alfredo or crispy baked catfish nuggets. Thank you Beverly for the fun and generous grab bag you put together for the young adult Foodie Friends (YAFFs).
Can you believe we are almost to our half-year mark? The theme for our May 11th cooking class is a kick-off to the summer season of outdoors cooking, Memorial Day and Backyard BBQ. In keeping with the traditional favorites, I will provide a jar of preserved peach BBQ sauce for each Foodie Friends; that's everyone on this email distribution including the YAFFs. I may even throw in a jar of fresh apple/black berry/cherry cobbler for dessert.
I entered the BBQ recipe in last year's OC Fair Food Competition. It didn't meet the judges' taste buds for any award but my friends and family loved it. So now you get to rate it according to your taste buds. As always, each jar of product I preserve (aka "can") is a labor of love and in honor of all of the jars "put up" by my Mom and all of the ladies of her era who diligently made sure their families had foods to eat during the cold winter months.
The cooking class will feature the demonstration of a tasty, healthy side dish. The actual recipe has not been decided yet. I am considering the following: apricot canapes, red quinoa and black bean salad, black-eye peas salad, Greek salad, corn/tomatoes/cucumber salad, warm cabbage salad with vinaigrette dressing, deviled eggs with smoked salmon and herbs, orzo pasta with sweet potatoes, kale with butternut squash salad, potato salad, baked beans, and pickled beets salad. The dishes in italicized type are recipes featured from past family meals/menus. As you can guess, my family gets a little adventurous when it comes to family meals especially at holiday and birthday dinners.
Until May 11th, Happy Cooking! Sybella
